Working with .ra media files
This section provides information on using .ra media files on your site.
Creating a .ram file
A "Ram" file is a small metafile ending with the .ram extension that is used to point to one or more .ra or .rm files. When the .ram file is accessed by the user, RealPlayer will play the media file referenced in the .ram file. If more that one file is referenced in the .ram file (on separate lines), they will be played one after the other in the order in which they appear in the file. If your media files end with the .ra extension, the entries in your .ram file should be in the following form:
pnm://[machinename].siteprotect.com/[domainname]/realaudio/[filename].ra
To find your machine name, contact support at support@way2host.com.
You do not have to use a .ram file in order to deliver RealAudio or RealVideo files. You can instead reference the media files directly. However, when you do this the user will see the full path to the file in their browser window.
Uploading your files
You should upload your .ram files and .ra files to your /realaudio directory:
home/[domainname]/www/realaudio/
Be sure to upload the .ram files in ASCII mode and the .ra files in binary mode.
Linking to your file
If you are using a .ram file, the link you place in your Web page should reference the .ram file and not the actual media clip. Your link should be in the following form:
<a href="http://www.[domainname.com]/realaudio/[filename].ram">
