Submitting your site to a search engine cannot ensure that your site will be ranked toward the top of the list of matches. Consider, for example, that a search returns 200 matches, with 20 entries listed per page. Users typically will scan only the first page or two of results; if your site is listed on page 9, it is highly unlikely that the user will ever
see it.

There are techniques you can use that can improve how your Web site ranks in search engines. This process, known as "search engine optimization," can be a very effective marketing strategy. There are firms that specialize in search engine optimization, but they can charge up to $1000 to "optimize" a small site. Fees of $10,000 and more are not uncommon for large sites.
